The fascination of the Australian Outback
68The Australian Outback covers almost two third of the continent, and several climate zones. There is a favourite place for every taste: a dusty track in the middle of nowhere, tropical rain forests, lonely beaches.
What is the Outback?
Well, the Outback is a place that can't be described in one sentence. It is the huge empty inland of Australia. However, the Outback is not boring, it is well worth to be visited.
Some people say the Outback is a "feeling" you'll notice when you get there. It might start 100 kilometres outside of the big cities, or when you don't see any humans for days. I arrive in the Outback when the glamour of the cities is far away.
Most people refer to the Central Deserts as the real Australian Outback. Ayers Rock (Uluru), The Olgas (KataTjuta) & Kings Canyon are by far the best known and most visited attractions in central Australia.
Famous tracks cross the inland. The Oodnadatta Track is a historic Outback track in Australia. The track follows the route of the Overland Telegraph Line and the Great Northern Railway Line (Old Ghan). There are still many relics of the now abandoned railway to be seen along the track.
Another famous and well-known track in the eastern Outback is the Birdsville Track. This old stock route was really rough and dangerous in the early days. Today it is a well maintained gravel road that is easy to travel in dry weather.
It's all about colours
The fascination of the Australian Outback captures visitors anytime. It is amazing to see the colours of the landscapes change during the day. A trip to the Outback is a photographers delight.
It is easy to fell in love with the Australian Outback. It is an ancient, peaceful land. The few people that live there welcome visitors and are always eager for a chat.
